Background and Beginning of the Mission

  아이티는 우리 델라웨어 한인 연합감리교회에 있어 은혜의 땅이자 동시에 아픔의 땅입니다. 프랑스 식민지였던 아이티는 독립 후 막대한 배상금을 지불해야 했고, 이는 오늘날까지 이어지는 경제적 빈곤의 뿌리가 되었습니다. 2010년 1월 12일, 수도 포르토프랭스에는 규모 7.0의 강진이 발생하여 약 30만 명의 사상자가 발생하고 도시 전체가 붕괴되었습니다. 이 비극 속에서 김승돈 선교사님은 하나님의 부르심에 순종하여 현지에 남기로 결단하고, 아이티의 복구와 복음 전파에 자신의 삶을 헌신하게 되었습니다.
  To our Delaware Korean United Methodist Church, Haiti has been both a land of grace and a land of sorrow. Once a French colony, Haiti was forced to pay a tremendous amount in reparations after gaining independence, laying the foundation for the ongoing economic hardships the country still faces today. On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the capital, Port-au-Prince, claiming approximately 300,000 lives and reducing the city to rubble. In the midst of this tragedy, Rev. Seungdon Kim, who was visiting Haiti on a mission trip, felt God's calling and chose to remain, dedicating his life to the restoration of Haiti and the proclamation of the Gospel.

2. 주요 사역 내용 
Major Ministries

  김승돈 선교사님의 피와 땀, 그리고 열정으로 10개가 넘는 교회가 세워졌고, 12개의 고아원이 설립되어 다양한 후원과 교육이 이루어졌습니다. 고아원에서는 한글, 영어, 음악, 태권도, 성경 암송 등이 교육되고 있으며, 이 모든 사역은 여러 교회의 협력으로 가능했습니다. 우리 교회도 이 귀한 사역에 함께 참여해 왔습니다.
  예수병원은 지역 의사와 간호사를 채용하여 하루에 약 150~200명의 환자들을 거의 무료로 진료해왔습니다.
  우리 교회는 2010년부터 2019년까지 매년 단기 선교팀(의료팀 및 대학생팀)을 파송해 왔으며, 약 500명 이상의 환자 진료, 고아원 사역, 노방 전도, 크레올어로 번역된 "바이블 타임" 보급 등의 다양한 복음 사역에 동참했습니다.
또한 매년 10월 셋째 주 토요일에는 Korean Food 바자회를 통해 지역 사회에 한국 문화를 소개하고, 수익 전액을 선교에 헌금해 왔습니다. 이 수익으로 3개 반 교회를 건축하고 헌당 예배를 드리는 일에 참여했습니다.
  청소년 센터 사역도 활발히 이루어졌습니다. 고아원에서 퇴소한 17세 이상의 청소년들이 범죄와 성착취에 노출되지 않도록 3년간 숙식 제공과 함께 직업 교육(영어, 한국어, 음악, 컴퓨터, 합기도 등)을 받고 있으며, 우리 교회는 현재 4명의 고아 청년을 매달 $400씩 후원하고 있습니다.

  Through Rev. Kim’s dedication, sweat, and passion, more than 10 churches have been established, and 12 orphanages have been supported with food distribution (bread, flour, rice) and education in Korean, English, music, Taekwondo, and Bible memorization. These ministries have been possible through the cooperation of many churches, including ours.
  The Jesus Hospital was established to provide near-free medical care to 150–200 patients daily, employing local doctors and nurses.
  From 2010 to 2019, our church sent annual short-term mission teams—including medical and college student teams—serving in areas such as treating over 500 patients, orphanage ministry, street evangelism, and distributing Bible Time devotionals translated into Creole.
  Each year, on the third Saturday of October, we also hosted a Korean Food Bazaar, introducing Korean culture to the local community and donating all proceeds to the mission. These funds contributed to the construction and dedication of three and a half churches in Haiti.
  Another key ministry is the Youth Center, which houses and trains orphans who age out of orphanages at 17. Over a three-year period, they receive room and board along with vocational training in English, Korean, music, computer skills, and Taekwondo. Our church currently supports four orphaned youth with $400 per month, funded through Communion offerings and individual donations.

  지난 2~3년간 아이티 수도 포르토프랭스는 무정부 상태 속에서 갱단들의 횡포와 범죄, 성폭력의 온상이 되어 왔습니다. 그로 인해 오랜 시간 동안 기도로 세워진 러브 앤 호프 선교센터와 세 곳의 예수병원이 모두 파손되는 안타까운 상황이 벌어졌습니다.
  그럼에도 불구하고, 현재 청소년 센터에서는 약 20명의 청년 고아들이 계속 교육을 받고 있고, ‘전도폭발’ 사역을 통해 복음 전파에 힘쓰고 있습니다.
  김승돈 선교사님은 건강을 회복하신 후, 아이티 북부의 제2의 항구도시인 **‘캡 헤이튼(Cap-Haïtien)’**에서 새로운 사역을 시작하셨습니다. 고아원, 음악학교, 의료사역, 전도사역 등 모든 것을 처음부터 다시 시작하며, 오직 하나님만 바라보며 순종의 길을 걷고 계십니다.
  Over the past two to three years, Port-au-Prince has descended into a state of anarchy, becoming a hub of violence, crime, and sexual assault due to gang dominance. Tragically, the Love and Hope Mission Center and three Jesus Hospitals—painstakingly built with prayer—have all been destroyed by gangs.
  Nevertheless, the Youth Center continues to operate, housing about 20 orphaned youth who are actively involved in Evangelism Explosion and passionate about sharing the Gospel.
  After recovering from health issues, Rev. Kim has begun a new ministry in Cap-Haïtien, the second-largest port city in northern Haiti. There, he is starting fresh with ministries including orphan care, music school, medical missions, and evangelism, faithfully walking the path of obedience with his eyes fixed on God.

That order and peace may be restored throughout Haiti, and that gangs may be subdued so the Gospel can be shared safely and freely once again.
- 현재 청소년 센터에 머물고 있는 청년 고아들이 잘 양육되고, 복음의 일꾼으로 성장하도록.
That the orphaned youth at the Youth Center may be well-nurtured and grow into faithful disciples of Christ.
- 북쪽 켑 헤이튼에서 시작된 새로운 사역이 하나님의 인도하심 가운데 풍성한 열매를 맺을 수 있도록.
That the new ministry in Cap-Haïtien may bear abundant fruit under God’s guidance and provision.

"아이티..."라는 말만 들어도 마음 깊은 곳에서 복잡한 감정이 올라옵니다. 수많은 사건과 후원, 사역자들의 노력 속에 '이제는 되려나' 하는 희망이 들지만, 다시금 끝없는 어둠의 나락으로 떨어져 버리는 현실은 우리로 하여금 무력감과 함께 깊은 기도의 자리로 이끕니다. 아이티 아이들의 반짝이는 눈동자 속에서 희망과 사랑의 빛을 보지만 그들을 가난에서 건져내지 못하는 현실이 우리 마음을 찢어 놓습니다. 하나님의 마음도 그러하시지 않을까요...?
When we hear the word “Haiti,” a swirl of emotions stirs within us.In the midst of so many efforts, donations, and sacrifices, we think “maybe this time…”Yet, again and again, Haiti falls into the darkness of despair. We see the shining eyes of children filled with hope and love, but feel helpless that we cannot lift them out of poverty. Perhaps… God's heart aches the same way.
