초창기 우리 교회 교인들

1979년 7월 22일 창립된 우리 교회는 당시 세례교인이 몇 명 되지 않았다. 필라델피아의 위성도시인 Wilmington, Delaware에는 듀폰(DuPont) 등 화학회사에서 근무하는 연구원 약 15명, 의사 7명, 상인 몇 명, 유학생 약 10명, 그리고 국제결혼한 가정의 여성 10명 정도가 거주하고 있었으며, 전체 한인 해외교민 수는 약 해외교민 수는 약 300명 내외였다.

그러나 1980년대와 1990년대를 거치면서 유학생과 상인의 수가 급격히 늘어났고, 21세기 초에는 약 2,000명으로 추산되었다.

이 글에서 말하는 ‘초창기’는 우리 교회 역사의 전반기, 즉 2000년 이전을 의미한다. 또한 이 글에 언급된 인물들은 필자의 기억을 바탕으로 기록되었기에 의도하지 않게 빠진 분들이 있을 수 있음을 미리 밝힌다. 호칭은 가장 최근의 직분으로 통일하였다.

우리 교회는 한때 외부에서 ‘의사·박사 교회’라고 불렸다. 초창기에는 이 지역에 거주하는 교인 대부분이 의사와 박사였기에 붙여진 별명이었지만, 시간이 지나면서 이러한 표현이 다른 해외 교민들이 우리 교회를 찾는 것을 주저하게 만드는 말로 받아들여지기도 했다. 지금도 일부에서는 “그 교회에 가서 얼마나 견디나 보자”라는 말을 하곤 한다. 교회 지도자들은 이러한 오명(stigma)을 없애기 위해 꾸준히 노력해 왔다.

과학자들

이기풍 박사(고 이연옥 집사의 남편)는 세계적인 독성학(Toxicology)의 권위자로서 창립 멤버이며, 지금까지도 교회에 대한 애정이 깊다.

김철환 박사(김염)는 인생의 말년에 하나님을 더욱 깊이 경외하게 되었다. 유성은 박사는 귀국하였다.

신성숙 권사는 15년 동안 교회 반주자로 충성하였으며, 남편인 신현국 박사는 DuPont 연구원으로 Tyvek 개발에 참여하여 이름을 널리 알렸다.

주화자 장로의 남편인 주승근 권사(박사)는 Hercules Company에서 오랫동안 연구에 종사하였다.

이규태 박사는 인생 후반기에 교회에 출석하였고, 김영환 권사(박사)는 DuPont에서 연구한 후 한국으로 귀국했다가 은퇴 후 다시 돌아왔다. 최해탁 권사(박사) 또한 DuPont에서 근무한 뒤 귀국하였다가 다시 미국으로 돌아왔다.

민준홍 박사는 지난 17년 동안 교회에 열심히 출석하고 있다.

경영인으로는 김동수 부사장과 황경수 집사를 들 수 있다. 이들은 한국에 선진 지식과 기술을 전달함으로써 한국 산업화에 크게 기여하였으며, 특히 화학 분야에서 두드러진 업적을 남겼다.

의사들

이명수 장로는 뛰어난 영상의학 전문의로서 교회를 위해 헌신하였다.

필자인 안세현 장로는 산부인과 전문의로 37년간 개업하였으며, 교회에 대한 공헌은 다른 자료들에 자세히 기록되어 있다.

배성호 목사는 신경과 전문의로 오랫동안 진료하였으며, 우리 교회 부목사로도 충성스럽게 섬겼다.

문대옥 목사는 정형외과 전문의로 개업하였고, 최근에는 한국의 낙도 선교에 열정을 쏟았다.

김홍완 장로는 알레르기 전문의로서 선교, 특히 아이티 선교에 오랫동안 헌신하였다.

김교안 권사는 성형외과 전문의로 오랫동안 개업한 후 지난 15년 동안 하나님과 더욱 깊은 영적 교제 가운데 신앙생활을 이어오고 있다.

대학 교수들

안병만 전 교육부 장관은 1980년대 초부터 델라웨어대학교 교환교수로 매년 방문하여 국제정치학을 강의하였다. 한국외국어대학교 교수와 총장을 역임하면서 많은 유학생을 지도하였고, 수많은 정치학 박사를 배출하여 한국 사회에 기여하였다.

왕영두 장로는 에너지 및 도시행정 분야에서 많은 업적을 남긴 교수일 뿐 아니라 교회에도 충성스럽게 봉사하였다. 그의 제자들은 한국의 여러 대학과 정부 기관(환경부 등)에서 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있다.

차구현 장로는 환경공학 교수로서 많은 한국인 유학생을 가르쳤으며, 교회에서도 충성된 일꾼으로 봉사하였다.

김대룡 장로는 델라웨어 주립대학교에서 경영학을 가르치고 있으며 주님의 귀한 종으로 섬기고 있다.

상인들

강규원 장로(가발업), 이승섭 장로(식당·잡화), 최준용 장로(구두·우체국), 송명진 권사, 김도원 권사, 송영석 장로(식품), 서삼수 장로(잡화), 손창용 집사(세탁업), 박장호 장로(식당), 이건수 권사(식당·세탁업), 송영호 권사(세탁업), 윤무관 권사(주택 중개업) 등은 모두 우리 교회의 중추적인 멤버로서 충성스럽게 섬겼다.

여신도들

주화자 장로는 교회의 어머니와 같은 존재로서 기도와 성경공부에 힘썼다.

안의숙 권사는 해외선교, 특히 과라니 선교에 헌신하였으며, 전국여선교회연합회 임원으로 봉사했고 성가대와 성전 꽃꽂이 사역에도 힘썼다.

김소영 장로는 젊은 세대 성경공부를 인도하며 교회 행정에도 헌신하였다.

윤은남 권사는 오랫동안 교회 사무원으로 봉사하였고, 차애리 권사는 25년 동안 무보수로 교회 반주를 맡았다.

김영주 권사, 최영옥 권사, 강옥순 권사, 이세영 집사는 성가대원으로 봉사하였으며, 김추자(허니 신) 권사, 배광희 권사, 문광선 권사, 이안나 권사, 송현주 권사, 윤선행 집사의 충성은 하나님께서 친히 갚아주실 것이라 믿는다.

그 밖에도 이름을 모두 기록하지 못한 많은 권사님과 집사님들이 계심을 안타깝게 생각한다.

또한 유학생과 방문자들의 이름을 모두 올리지 못한 점을 죄송스럽게 생각한다. 기회가 된다면 훗날 **「우리 교회의 한국 선교 이야기」**를 별도로 기록하고자 한다.

위에 언급한 분들은 초창기 우리 교회의 중추적인 성도들이었다. 그분들의 봉사와 충성이 없었다면 오늘의 우리 교회는 존재하기 어려웠을 것이다.

후반부인 지난 25년의 역사는 훗날 또 다른 기록으로 남겨지기를 소망한다.

교회 창립 47주년을 앞두고 이 글을 우리 주님과 모든 성도님들께 드릴 수 있음을 하나님의 큰 은혜와 축복으로 생각한다.

The Early Members of Our Church

Founded on July 22, 1979, Delaware Korean United Methodist Church began with only a handful of baptized members. At the time, Wilmington, Delaware, a neighboring city of Philadelphia, was home to approximately fifteen research scientists working for companies such as DuPont, seven physicians, several business owners, about ten international students, and a number of multicultural families. The local Korean community numbered only about 300 people.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the number of international students and business owners grew rapidly, and by the early 2000s the Korean community had expanded to approximately 2,000 residents.

For the purposes of this article, the term “early years” refers to the period before 2000. The individuals mentioned here are those the author remembers personally, and some names may have been unintentionally omitted. This brief record is offered with gratitude for those who helped establish and sustain our church.

During its early years, our church became known in the community for its many physicians and researchers. While this reflected the backgrounds of many members, the reputation sometimes created the impression that the church was only for professionals. Over the years, church leaders have worked intentionally to build a welcoming congregation for everyone.

Scientists and Researchers

Dr. Ki-Poong Lee, a world-renowned expert in toxicology and one of the church's founding members, has remained deeply devoted to the congregation throughout the years.

Dr. Chul-Hwan Kim came to a deeper reverence for God later in life, while Dr. Sung-Eun Yoo eventually returned to Korea.

Sung-Sook Shin faithfully served as the church pianist for fifteen years. Her husband, Dr. Hyun-Kook Shin, a researcher at DuPont, gained recognition for his work on the development of Tyvek.

Dr. Seung-Geun Joo spent many years conducting research at Hercules Company.

Dr. Gyu-Tae Lee joined the church later in life. Dr. Young-Hwan Kim worked at DuPont before returning to Korea and later came back to the United States after retirement. Dr. Hae-Tak Choi followed a similar path.

Dr. Jun-Hong Min has faithfully attended the church for the past seventeen years.

Among business executives, Dong-Soo Kim and Kyung-Soo Hwang made significant contributions by sharing advanced knowledge and technology with Korea, particularly in the chemical industry.

Physicians

Dr. Myung-Soo Lee, a distinguished radiologist, devoted himself faithfully to the church.

The author, Dr. Se-Hyun Ahn, practiced obstetrics and gynecology for thirty-seven years. His contributions to the church are documented elsewhere.

Dr. Sung-Ho Bae, a neurologist, faithfully served both his patients and the congregation while also serving in pastoral ministry.

Dr. Dae-Ok Moon, an orthopedic surgeon, later dedicated himself to mission work among Korea's remote island communities.

Dr. Hong-Wan Kim, an allergy specialist, devoted many years to missions, especially in Haiti.

Dr. Kyo-An Kim, a plastic surgeon, has enjoyed a particularly deep spiritual journey with God during the past fifteen years.

Educators

Dr. Byung-Man Ahn, former Minister of Education of Korea, served as a visiting professor at the University of Delaware beginning in the early 1980s, teaching international politics. As a professor and later president of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, he mentored many students who would become scholars and leaders in Korea.

Dr. Young-Doo Wang made significant contributions in the fields of energy and urban administration while faithfully serving the church. His students continue to serve in universities and government agencies throughout Korea.

Dr. Goo-Hyun Cha, a professor of environmental engineering, educated many Korean international students while also serving the church with dedication.

Dr. Dae-Ryong Kim, a professor of business administration at Delaware State University, continues to be a faithful servant of Christ.

Business Leaders

Among the business community were Kyu-Won Kang (wig industry), Seung-Seob Lee (restaurant and retail), Joon-Yong Choi (shoe business and postal services), Myung-Jin Song, Do-Won Kim, Young-Seok Song (food business), Sam-Soo Seo (retail), Chang-Yong Son (laundry business), Jang-Ho Park (restaurant), Gun-Soo Lee (restaurant and laundry), Young-Ho Song (laundry business), and Moo-Kwan Yoon (real estate).

Together they formed an essential part of the church's foundation and faithfully supported its ministry.

Women of Faith

Hwa-Ja Joo became known as a spiritual mother of the congregation through her devotion to prayer and Bible study.

Eui-Sook Ahn dedicated herself to overseas missions, especially ministry among the Guarani people, while also serving in women's ministries, the choir, and the flower ministry.

So-Young Kim led Bible studies for younger adults while giving herself wholeheartedly to church administration.

Eun-Nam Yoon faithfully served for many years as the church secretary, and Ae-Ri Cha volunteered as the church pianist for twenty-five years without compensation.

Young-Joo Kim, Young-Ok Choi, Ok-Soon Kang, and Se-Young Lee faithfully served in the choir, while Choo-Ja Kim (Honey Shin), Kwang-Hee Bae, Kwang-Sun Moon, Anna Lee, Hyun-Joo Song, and Sun-Haeng Yoon quietly served the church with remarkable faithfulness.

The author regrets that it is impossible to mention every individual who contributed to the life of the church, including many international students and visitors who became part of our church family.

The individuals named above formed the foundation of Delaware Korean United Methodist Church during its formative years. Their sacrifice, faithfulness, and unwavering commitment made it possible for the church not only to survive but also to flourish.

It is the author's hope that the history of the past twenty-five years will one day be recorded with the same gratitude and care.

As we celebrate the 47th Anniversary of Delaware Korean United Methodist Church, it is a privilege to dedicate this remembrance to our Lord and to all those whose faithful service helped shape our church's history.
