우리 교회가 시작되던 초기, 특히 1970~90년대에는 지역에 한인회와 같은 사회단체가 아직 제대로 조직되어 있지 않았기 때문에, 우리 교회가 상당 부분 그 역할을 감당하였다. 그 당시 우리 교회가 지역 한인사회와 이웃을 위해 어떤 일들을 하였는지 몇 가지 사례를 기록으로 남겨두고자 한다.

전쟁 이후 한국 고아들의 해외 입양이 활발하던 시절이 있었다. 내 환자 중 한 사람인 Susan은 한국 고아 두 명, 딸과 아들을 입양하였다. 어느 날 Susan은 자신의 집에 와서 비슷한 처지의 입양가족들이 모이는 ‘Welcome Home’이라는 그룹과 대화를 나누어 달라고 부탁하였다. 새롭게 부모가 된 이들은 입양한 자녀들이 태어난 나라의 문화를 알고 싶어 했고, 어떻게 하면 아이들을 잘 양육할 수 있을지 진지하게 고민하고 있었다. 나는 그들의 질문을 들으며 정성껏 답변해 주었다.

우리 교회가 Ebenezer UMC의 옛 건물을 사용하던 시절에는 본교회의 Williams 부부가 구순구개열을 가진 한국 어린이 두 명을 입양하여 수술을 받을 수 있도록 도와주기도 하였다.

또 하루는 한 입양가족으로부터 전화가 왔다. 입양한 아들의 심한 분노 발작(temper tantrum) 때문에 어려움을 겪고 있다는 내용이었다. 나중에 알게 된 사실이지만, 결국 그 아이를 ‘펄벅재단’으로 돌려보냈다고 하였다. 당시 입양가족들이 겪었던 현실적인 어려움을 보여주는 안타까운 일이었다.

1981년 우리 교회는 첫 야외예배를 드렸다. 이 자리에 한국 어린이를 입양한 가족들을 초청하여 함께 즐거운 하루를 보냈다. 이후 우리 교회는 ‘Agape Day’를 마련하여 입양가족들을 지속적으로 초청하였다. 한복 입기, 국악 연주, 한국 음식 나누기 등을 통해 한국 문화를 소개하고 서로 친교를 나누었다. 이는 입양된 아이들과 그 가족들이 한국의 문화와 정체성을 이해하는 데 도움을 주기 위한 교회의 작은 노력이었다.

교인들의 자녀들에게 한국어와 한국 문화를 가르치기 위해 1986년에는 한국학교를 설립하였다. 초대 교장에는 배성호 씨, 이사장에는 김철환 씨가 맡았으며, 필자는 이사회 총무로 임명되었다. 한국학교는 매주 토요일 우리 교회에서 모였으며, 교회에서도 학교의 운영과 성장을 위해 많은 도움을 주었다.

이사회에서는 학교 운영기금을 마련하기 위해 매년 골프대회와 연말 파티를 개최하였다. 세월이 흐르면서 학교는 점차 성장하였고, 마침내 독립된 장소로 옮겨 나가게 되었다. 올해로 설립 40주년을 맞는다고 한다. 그동안 학교를 위해 수고한 김정미 선생님을 비롯한 신실한 선생님들의 오랜 헌신에 깊은 감사와 치하를 드린다.

델라웨어 지역에는 1996년까지 한인회가 없었다. 그 이전에는 실업인협회가 지역 교포들, 특히 상인들의 권익을 위해 많은 일을 감당하였다. 회장으로는 조문형 씨, 민병묵 씨, 정병현 씨 등이 수고하였다.

교포들의 숫자가 점차 늘어나면서 한인회의 필요성이 논의되었고, 마침내 1996년 ‘델라웨어주 한인회(The State of Delaware Korean-American Association)’가 결성되었다. 초대 회장으로 송태섭 박사가 수고하였으며, 이후 박상진, 안세현, 김영근, 문대옥, 박희철, 이명식, 조나단 박 등 여러 분이 회장으로 봉사하였다.

매년 Memorial Day 피크닉에는 한국전쟁 참전용사들을 초청하여 감사의 마음을 전하였다. 특히 2000년 6월 25일은 한국전쟁이 발발한 지 정확히 50년이 되는 날이었으며, 마침 주일이었다. 이를 기념하여 참전용사협회와 지역 한인교회들이 함께 Memorial Park에 모여 새벽기도회를 가졌다. 이 자리에는 당시 연방 상원의원이었던 조 바이든(Joe Biden)도 참석하였으며, 필자는 당시 한인회장으로서 하나님의 말씀을 전하였다.

이 밖에도 우리 교회는 지역 한인사회의 장자교회로서 사회적 책임을 마다하지 않고 지난 47년 동안 그 사명을 감당해 왔다. 이 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜이며 성령의 능력으로 이루어진 일이라고 생각한다.

앞으로도 우리 교회가 교회 안에만 머무르지 않고 지역사회와 이웃을 섬기며, 사회정의를 이루어 가는 일에 맡겨진 사명을 충실히 감당하기를 기원한다.

Our Church’s Engagement with the Community

In the early years of our church, particularly during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, there were few established Korean-American community organizations in the area. As a result, our church took on many of the roles that such organizations would later fulfill. I would like to preserve a few examples of how our church served the Korean-American community and our neighbors during those years.

In the decades following the Korean War, international adoption of Korean orphans was widespread. One of my patients, Susan, adopted two Korean children, a daughter and a son. One day, she invited me to her home to speak with a group called “Welcome Home,” which consisted of families in similar circumstances. As new adoptive parents, they wanted to learn more about the culture of the country where their children had been born. They were also sincerely concerned about how best to raise their adopted children. I listened carefully to their questions and did my best to answer them thoughtfully.

When our church was meeting in the former Ebenezer UMC building, a couple from the host congregation, Mr. and Mrs. Williams, adopted two Korean children with cleft lip and palate and helped them receive the surgeries they needed.

On another occasion, I received a call from an adoptive family who was struggling because their adopted son was experiencing severe temper tantrums. I later learned that the family ultimately returned the child to the Pearl S. Buck Foundation. It was a heartbreaking situation that reflected some of the very real challenges adoptive families faced at the time.

In 1981, our church held its first outdoor worship service. We invited families who had adopted Korean children and spent a joyful day together. In the years that followed, our church established “Agape Day,” regularly inviting adoptive families to join us. Through activities such as trying on hanbok, listening to traditional Korean music, and sharing Korean food, we introduced them to Korean culture and enjoyed fellowship together. It was one of the ways our church sought to help adopted children and their families better understand and appreciate their Korean heritage.

In 1986, we established a Korean school to teach the Korean language and culture to the children of our church and community. Mr. Sung Ho Bae served as the first principal, Mr. Chul Hwan Kim as chairman of the board, and I was appointed secretary of the board. The school met every Saturday at our church, which provided significant support for its ministry and development.

To raise funds for the school, the board organized an annual golf tournament and year-end party. As the years passed, the school continued to grow and eventually moved to an independent location. This year marks its 40th anniversary. I would like to express my deep appreciation to Ms. Jung Mi Kim and the many other faithful teachers whose dedication and service have sustained the school throughout the years.

Until 1996, there was no Korean-American Association in Delaware. Prior to its establishment, the Korean-American Business Association served the local Korean community, particularly by advocating for the interests of Korean-American business owners. Mr. Moon Hyung Cho, Mr. Byung Mook Min, Mr. Byung Hyun Jung, and others served as presidents and devoted themselves to this work.

As the Korean-American population continued to grow, discussions began regarding the need for a formal community association. In 1996, the State of Delaware Korean-American Association was established. Dr. Tae Sup Song served as its first president, followed over the years by Sang Jin Park, Se Hyun Ahn, Young Geun Kim, Dae Ok Moon, Hee Chul Park, Myung Sik Lee, Jonathan Park, and others who faithfully served the community.

At the annual Memorial Day picnic, Korean War veterans were invited so that the community could express its gratitude for their service and sacrifice. A particularly meaningful occasion took place on June 25, 2000, exactly 50 years after the outbreak of the Korean War. Since June 25 fell on a Sunday that year, Korean churches in the area gathered with members of the Korean War Veterans Association for an early morning prayer service at Memorial Park. Then-U.S. Senator Joe Biden also attended the gathering, and I had the privilege of delivering the message as president of the Korean-American Association.

In these and many other ways, our church has embraced its social responsibility as one of the pioneering Korean churches in the region. For the past 47 years, it has continued to serve not only its congregation but also the wider Korean-American community and its neighbors. I believe that all of this has been possible through the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is my prayer that our church will continue to look beyond its own walls, faithfully serving our neighbors and the wider community and fulfilling its calling to pursue justice and the common good.
